Using Edmodo in a k-12 School- lesson 25
This techie brekkie was prepared for a staff professional development session on our first day back at school for 2011. It was designed to introduce all staff to the benefits of using edmodo in their classroom.
We started the session viewing this prezi.
Cynthia Medina was kind enough to give me permission to show this slideshare which beautifully illustrates examples of how to sign up and use edmodo in a high school setting.
Edmodo PresentationI also showed the edmodo user guide which has excellent and straight forward directions on how to get started with edmodo.
I included this further video as a guide to some of the features of edmodo.
I also recommended staff read this excellent blog post written by George Couros on the ‘Connected Principals’ blog. Especially those teachers still unconvinced of the need to use such tools as edmodo in their classroom. As George says ‘Knowledge is power. Let’s work with our students so that they make the right choices in this new world that they are facing.’

Hi Henrietta, I absolutely LOVE your blogs, they’re very inspiring! I’m excited about Edmodo because I was looking for a platform similar to Facebook without all of the issues
I’m only planning on having the one group (my class) and I just had a couple of quick questions –
1. If students only message each other am I able to see that as the administrator of the group? (concerns about bullying!)
2. I’m planning on showing parents the videos you have on Edmodo, did you have any concerns you weren’t able to alleviate? (Just not sure what tricky questions I may be asked!)
3. Did you send home permission slips?
I’m sorry to ask so much, but I really want to have my head around it before I approach my principal!
Thank you for your lovely comment about my blogs. As far as edmodo goes. Yes as administrator you can see everything that goes on. You can delete comments if they are not appropriate. Use it though as a chance to teach and learn about digital footprints. let them understand that the internet is for ever and so nothing should be written that is inappropriate. Yes we seek parent permission before using edmodo, I have had no problems with that but the edmodo small print requires that you have done that. We write a letter introducing our parents to all the technology we intend to use and get permission for it all. They love edmodo because it is secure password protected groups and I think they will also like the new feature of parent groups. I would let your parents see that they can be involved too.
Have a great term
