Lesson 19 – Googlefest

This techie brekkie was inspired by a session I took at Ulearn10, called ‘Googlefest’. At Ulearn10 it was presented by Dorothy Burt an eLearning Team Leader at Pt England School in New Zealand. Dorothy has kindly given me permission to share her session here.

The first video we watched was a tongue in cheek look at a society trying to live without google. You can watch that here.

Having a google account is really useful these days, but did you know that you do not have to have gmail? Learn more about this here how to create a google account and how to change your preferences here.

Dorothy also showed us how to use google wonder wheel and google time line to enhance searches. When starting to research a topic just look for the ‘more search tools’ on the left hand side of the toolbar and the possibilities are enormous.

We also discussed google apps and google presentations and their uses in the classroom.

During this session our aim was to achieve the following.

All staff to sign up for a gmail account – if they do not have one already.

We also looked igoogle and discussed how having igoogle set as a home page is a useful tool. In igoogle one can quickly view google docs, gmail and google reader. All staff running class blogs should have google readers set up to view their student posts and comments.
